Should you repair or replace your windows?.
The right decision starts with the fault, not the age of the window alone. A failed sealed unit or damaged handle may need a different remedy from a cracked frame or an unsuitable opening. We explain what to check before deciding on repairs or replacement.

Identify the symptom accurately
Describe whether moisture is between the panes or on a surface you can wipe. Note draughts, stiffness, failed locks, damaged hinges or visible frame defects. Surface condensation can involve humidity and ventilation, while misting within a sealed unit points to a different issue. A useful enquiry distinguishes the symptoms rather than asking for a whole-window replacement by default.
When a targeted repair may make sense
If the frame and installation remain sound, a compatible replacement sealed unit, handle, hinge or lock may address an isolated fault. The condition of the surrounding parts and availability of suitable replacements matter. A repair should restore the intended operation; it should not be presented as correcting unrelated thermal or structural problems.
When replacement deserves consideration
Substantial frame damage, persistent installation problems or a planned change in opening style can make replacement worth discussing. The survey should explain what a new window would change and what it would not. Consider ventilation, escape requirements and the condition of the surrounding opening as well as the desired appearance.
Compare the proposed work, not just the label
Ask which parts would be replaced, what existing elements would remain and whether finishing is included. For replacement frames, establish the relevant approval route and documents. For repairs, ask about compatibility and any remaining limitations. Prices are supplied at quotation stage once the actual work has been assessed.
Before you decide.
Does misted double glazing mean I need a whole new window?
Not always. If the frame and hardware are suitable, replacing the failed sealed glass unit may be possible. The condition and compatibility need checking.
Can a window that will not close be repaired?
Sometimes. Hinges, handles, locking parts or alignment may be responsible. A damaged frame or a wider installation problem may require a different remedy.
Can I request advice without knowing which option I need?
Yes. Describe the symptoms and include your postcode. The survey can establish whether a targeted repair or full replacement is the practical proposal.
