How to understand misted double glazing.

Fogging on a window does not always have the same cause. Moisture on the room-facing glass, condensation on the outdoor surface and mist trapped between panes are different observations, and identifying where it sits helps guide the next step. This is not a remote diagnosis: the frame, sealed unit and surrounding conditions may need an inspection before repair options are clear.

Notice which glass surface is affected

If condensation is on the room-facing surface, it is exposed to indoor conditions; if it is on the outside, it is on the weather-facing surface. Surface moisture can vary with the conditions around the glass. If haze or droplets appear enclosed between panes and cannot be wiped from either accessible surface, that can indicate failure of the sealed glass unit. A survey is needed to assess the condition.

What a failed sealed unit may mean

Insulating glass relies on a sealed space between panes. Misting within that space can indicate that the seal has failed, but the full condition and suitable remedy depend on the particular window. The surrounding frame may be serviceable or may have separate concerns. A qualified professional can inspect the unit and frame and explain whether replacement glazing or another scope is appropriate.

Keep other window faults separate

A misted pane does not by itself explain a window that sticks, will not close or has a faulty lock. Hinges, handles, locking mechanisms, frame alignment and glazing are distinct parts that can need separate assessment. Describe each symptom when arranging an inspection so the relevant components can be checked and the proposed work can address the actual issues.

Ask about the scope before work

Ask whether the assessment covers only the glass unit or also the frame, beads, hardware and operation of the opening. Confirm what is proposed, what remains outside the scope and how access and finishing will be handled. Glass can be heavy and break into dangerous fragments; do not try to remove or repair glazing yourself. Contact a qualified glazing professional for inspection and repair.

Before you decide.

How can I tell if mist is between the panes?

Check whether the affected area is on an accessible room-side or outdoor surface, or appears enclosed within the glazing. If its position is unclear, arrange a professional assessment rather than attempting to dismantle the window.

Does mist between panes mean the whole window needs replacing?

Not necessarily. It can indicate a failed sealed unit, but the frame and installation also need checking. A survey establishes whether replacement glazing is suitable or a wider repair is needed.

Can misting cause a lock or hinge problem?

Misting and hardware faults may be separate issues. Ask for the glass, frame operation, hinges and locking mechanism to be assessed individually if more than one symptom is present.
