Practical homeowner guidance

Why is your conservatory too cold or too hot?.

A room that is uncomfortable in different seasons needs an assessment of the whole conservatory. Roof type, glazing, orientation, ventilation, draughts and the way it connects to the house can all matter. Replacing the roof is one option, not an automatic diagnosis.

Record when the room becomes uncomfortable

Note the time of day, season and weather when the problem is worst. Explain whether the room is cold even with heating, overheats in direct sun or has condensation and draughts. Photographs of the roof, glazing and connection to the house can help an initial conversation, although the structure still needs checking in person.

Check faults and ventilation first

Failed sealed units, leaking roof joints, damaged seals or doors that do not close properly can undermine comfort. Ventilation and moisture control are separate considerations. A repair to a specific fault may help without changing the whole room, but adding heat alone does not resolve all building or ventilation problems.

Compare glazing and insulated roof options

Roof glazing, solar-control specifications, shading and an insulated replacement roof affect the room differently. Consider daylight, headroom and how the conservatory will be used. An insulated roof may change the structural load and the approval requirements; suitability of the existing walls, frames and foundations must be assessed.

Set a realistic scope for improvements

A written proposal should identify the cause being addressed, the chosen system and any associated work. Ask about ventilation, insulation, finishing and approvals. No roof or glazing change should be presented as a guarantee that every comfort issue will disappear; the condition and use of the whole space matter.

Before you decide.

Does an uncomfortable conservatory always need a new roof?

No. Faults, glazing, draughts, ventilation and exposure should be assessed. A repair or a different specification may be appropriate depending on the cause.

Can an insulated roof reduce the natural light?

Changing from a glazed roof to a solid system changes how daylight enters. Discuss the proposed design, any rooflights and the effect on adjoining rooms before deciding.

What information should I send with my enquiry?

Include your postcode, approximate conservatory size, existing roof type and when the room feels too hot or cold. Note any leaks, failed glass or closing problems.
